Curriculum Vitae and Research Interests of René Jorna (University of Groningen)

My research interests are:

1) Cognition, planning and scheduling

2) Semiotics

3) Cognition and decision support systems

4) Knowledge management, Sustainable innovation and

    Knowledge conversion

Ad 1) Cognition, planning and scheduling: Creating computer systems to perform a task that requires expert knowledge is complex. To a certain extent, the developer has to gain the task expertise himself in order to design adequate decision support. Several methods are available to capture the knowledge of an expert and to implement this in a knowledge based system. However, these methods do not make adequate use of previous experiences encountered in development trajectories in the same problem domain. We were confronted with this problem in the domain of planning and scheduling. In building knowledge based systems for scheduling support (e.g., ZKR, for nurse scheduling) we realized that there could be possibilities for reuse. We saw several similarities in the domain as well as in the systems, but were unable to get grip on the issue at once. An adequate conceptual apparatus for modeling the scheduling domain, the task execution and the supporting systems was missing. The process of developing computer systems for task support of planning and scheduling is no unique activity that must be performed from scratch each time. Reuse of previously created conceptual and technical modules is possible and recommendable. We claim that adequate computer support starts with a (cognitive) task analysis. This analysis reveals general as well as unique aspects. The general aspects can be reused. However, a generic conceptual framework is necessary that separates general from unique aspects in the task domain and task performance. We propose the Scheduling Expertise Concept (SEC) as a framework for planning and scheduling. The framework is domain independent and takes into account organizational and task performance characteristics. This generic framework is implemented in a computer system, the SEC-system. The SEC-models and SEC-system enable faster development processes in the planning and scheduling domain. Also see Wezel, Jorna & Meystel (Eds.)(2006) Planning in Intelligent Systems. New York: Wiley.

Ad 2) Semiotics: From the point of view of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) a scientific field or discipline related to communication and interaction based on signs, that is to say symbols, signals, icons, etc. is necessary. However, such a field already exists, it is called semiotics, but it is not as well known as it should be. This situation has to be regretted for two reasons. In the first place several elements of this field, e.g., theory fragments from the works of Leibniz, Peirce, Morris, Hjelmslev, Goodman and Eco can easily be applied to A.I. research. In the second place there remains an explicit need for a theory of communication and interaction between natural and artificial intelligent systems. The communication between humans and between humans and computers is often realized with the help of highly sophisticated signs and other communication structures. Posner has demarcated the field of semiotics in the very first issue of the Zeitschrift für Semiotik (1979), as follows:

!  Semiotics studies all sorts of sign processes in the communication and the exchange of information between humans, between humans and other organisms and inside organisms in general.

In this definition there is no reference to the concepts and latest results of the study of human cognition and computer systems. Moreover, there is no mention of the fact that the processing of information is considered to involve symbol systems, symbol manipulation, computation and (mental) representations. For that reason I proposed a slightly adjusted definition (Jorna, 1990).

!  Semiotics is the study of all sorts of sign or symbol process in the communication and the exchange of knowledge, in the sense of data, between and inside information processing systems, such as humans, other organisms and machines.

Definition (2) has the advantage that it takes into account the conception of sophisticated modern computers and humans as symbol manipulating devices. The Handbook of Semiotics by Posner, Sebeok & Robering (1999-2002), includes the latest research efforts on semiotics and classifies the study of signs in relation to such areas as endosemiosis, zoosemiosis, phytosemiosis, anthroposemiosis and machinesemiosis. Semiosis is equivalent with sign (or symbol) processing and represents the process level. Semiotics represents the meta level and studies signs, sign structures and sign processing. Nöth (1985) provides an extensive overview of all sorts of interpretations of semiotics and confronts the broad definitions (1) and (2) with a narrow definition, in which semiotics is restricted to the field of anthroposemiotics. Within this field, criteria such as cultural determination (which opposes nature and culture), systematicity of signs (which focuses on the structure of sign systems) and intentionality (which means that only signs produced with the intention to communicate are relevant to study) are formulated. These criteria further restrict the applicability of semiotics.

Ad 3) Cognition and decision support systems: From a classical point of view decision support software mostly consists in sophisticated assistance by mathematical and arithmetic procedures. Decision making, however, often consists of questions related to information gathering, sense making and interpretation. Conceptualizations for this kind of support can be found in cognitive psychology and semiotics. The first deals with mental representations and cognitive architecture, the second with sign and symbol interpretation. These perspectives were directing the development of the decision support program STUDAS (STUDy Assistance System). Studas supports students facing the problem whether and how to continue their studies. Studas helps students in constructing an internal knowledge space. The program is based on questions like "Who am I?", "What do I want?", "What is (out) there?" and "How?"
